Automatic & machine translation

There was a time when automatic translation was regarded as either an academic exercise or a convenient way to obtain a rough “gist” of the contents of an e-mail or a single web page. However, technological advances such as statistical MT mean that our clients increasingly consider scenarios in which automatic translation can be deployed as part of a wider workflow – for example, where the volume of content requiring translation could not realistically be approached as a human translation task, for reasons of cost or speed.

In other words, we and our clients see automatic translation as an additional language service to enable more content to be translated – rather than as an alternative language service to replace human translation.

That doesn’t mean we recommend automatic translation as a matter of routine: it would not normally be advisable for public-facing press releases, for example, and we certainly wouldn’t use it before a thorough discussion with the client. But in some cases it can be appropriate – for example, it may enable one of our clients to translate millions of words of user-generated content which would otherwise be completely out of reach.

That’s why we’ve created MT plus: a flexible automatic-translation technology which can be integrated into an existing workflow (for example, to translate content originating from aggregated news feeds or database sources), incorporating a human post-edit stage if required. MT plus adopts a best-of-both-worlds approach by combining traditional translation memory technology with advanced automatic translation. And if you have a preference for an existing MT engine or API – such as Microsoft Translator, Google Translate, Moses, Kantan, Systran, BeGlobal or Omnifluent – then MT plus can be plugged in to it right away.
